Inside the casino at the bellagio las vegas

The Bellagio was named after a town on Lake Como in Italy, a popular tourist attraction and playground for the rich. As it turned out though, the Bellagio resort ended up being far more famous, one of the most famous resort casinos in the world.

The project was conceived by casino mogul Steve Wynn who originally bought the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas and after the completion of the Mirage in 1989, the company name was changed to Mirage Resorts, which also owned several other Nevada casinos.

The Bellagio was to be their centerpiece though and the $1.6 billion that they spent on its construction made that pretty clear, which at the time was the most expensive casino ever built. No expense was to be spared, and the project also included an 8 acre man made lake, which was to become the resort casino’s most famous attraction.

On October 15th, 1998, the site officially opened, with a party that itself cost the casino $88 million to put on. They were certainly looking to make a big splash, and that they did.

The Bellagio is most famous for its impressive water show, The Fountains of Bellagio, choreographed to music, with lights and water jets shooting as high as 460 feet into the air. Many people come to the Bellagio for the fountain show alone, and many of their rooms face it so that guests can view it right from their rooms. The shows run throughout the afternoon up until midnight.

This hotel casino resort is much more than just a water show though. It is both a five star and an AAA Five Diamond property, and while it does tend to be more expensive than most places in Vegas, guests happily pay extra for the quality experience overall that the Bellagio offers.

The Bellagio’s 36 story exterior is on the conservative side by Vegas standards, but its inside is filled with beauty and luxury, starting with the stunningly gorgeous 2,000 hand blown flowers on the ceiling of their lobby, covering 2,000 square feet. This is just a taste of what’s to come as you explore the property further.

The Bellagio’s Impressive Features

While most people come here to gamble, the Bellagio is so much more than just their casino, which is impressive enough by itself. They have a Conservatory and Botanical Gardens that is way more impressive than you would expect at a casino, which changes with the seasons. There is also a Museum of Fine Art, and these side exhibits don’t appeal to everyone’s taste but they are certainly niceties and add to the overall value of the experience here.

This isn’t just a Five Diamond property, they are the only Las Vegas hotel and casino to win the award 10 or more times in a row, and they are up to 15 consecutive awards, and this is not expected to end anytime soon. Two of their restaurants have also won AAA Five diamond awards.

The rooms here are tastefully and luxuriously appointed, with some great views, including fountain view rooms. Standard rooms are 510 square feet, with suites running up to 4075 square feet, and villas also available of 6500 square feet if that’s not enough room for you. The Bellagio caters very well to both the everyday visitor and the super rich, and everyone in between, and all are well cared for.

Being an upscale resort, the dining options do tend to be more upscale in general than a typical Vegas casino, something that those who enjoy fine dining will particularly enjoy. There are several award winning restaurants, some of which have even earned Michelin stars, the pinnacle of restaurant achievement.

There are many different restaurants to choose from, and something for everyone, especially at their buffet restaurant, which is so popular that one often has to wait in line for quite a while to get a table, but people do it because they feel it’s worth the wait.

There are 7 bars, lounges, and nightclubs to visit here, with some open 24 hours, headlined by The Hyde and The Bank, which bring all the elegance of the Bellagio to the night scene. Guests can also relax and enjoy several more quieter lounges.

This is also the home of the Cirque du Soleil’s production of “O,” which remains a very popular attraction here. There is plenty of other entertainment here as well though, and of course, you are in Vegas, so there’s much more to be had elsewhere on the strip.

The amenities here are of a high quality as well, the service is of a high standard. Guests can also enjoy their spa and fitness center, as well as everything else they offer here.

Bellagio Tables & Games

By all accounts, the Bellagio offers some of the most liberal and fairest blackjack rules on the Las Vegas Strip, and not just at the high limit tables. This is particularly true of the rules regarding splitting pairs, which allow for splitting up to three times to form four separate hands, re-splitting of Aces (RSA) and doubling down after a split (DAS) [2]. Only the double-deck game with limits of $50~$10,000 disallows RSA, along with surrender, but because the dealer must stand on all totals of 17, the House edge is just about as good as it gets in Las Vegas at 0.27% [3].

At the tables with six-deck shoes, two variations are played. Both offer surrender and RSA as well as DAS, and one has the dealer hit on soft 17, which is common along the Strip for $10 and $15 games, giving the House an advantage of 0.48%. However, the other version has the dealer stand on all 17s for a House edge of just 0.28%, making it arguably the best low stakes game around [4]

Elsewhere in the pit area, there are a couple of tables dedicated to Blackjack Switch. Try to avoid the low limit tables that feature dealing from continuous shuffle machines. Players are almost better off on the slot floor, where there are a number of IGT video blackjack consoles that accept wagers in increments of 25¢, 50¢ and $1.

What’s Different

As noted above, the House rules at the Bellagio are among the most liberal available along the Strip, but that’s not the only good news for blackjack players. Unlike some of its less well established neighbors (read: “Cosmopolitan”), this casino does not have some kind of mad vendetta going on against advantage players. The dealers are focused on managing the games, not on catching card counters, and according to at least one regular, “the fact that a lot of money runs through Bellagio will allow you to get plenty of large bets out on the table without getting much heat from the pit [5]

M Life for Frequent Blackjack Players

The Bellagio is part of MGM Resorts International, so it shares its player’s club with such sister properties as the MGM Grand, Aria, Mandalay Bay, the Mirage, Excalibur and New York New York, among others. The loyalty program is called “M life” and, unlike some of its competitors, it does not mix “points” awarded for slot play with credit earned for table games [6]. Instead, blackjack players “are eligible to earn Express Comps and Tier Credits based on table games play … based on your average bet and time played.” The Express Comps may in turn be redeemed for hotel accommodations, dining, entertainment, M life Moments and more at any M life destination. As players move up in tiers, from Sapphire to Pearl, Gold, Platinum and NOIR, they earn even more Express Comps for their play. But the fine print can’t be ignored; there is “a minimum betting requirement to be rated for Table Games (so) please see the supervisor in the pit for assistance at each participating M life resort.” If you use an American express card to gamble, then you can compound your brick and mortar casino rewards program with the one offered from Amex.

The Inside View

For those who enjoy a semi-private game, “Club Privé” is the Bellagio’s high-limit lounge and gaming area [7]. Designed by Adam Tihany, it provides high rollers a secluded space with a contemporary feel, including an elevated floor, interlinking metal, dark wood, glass and silver-leafed screen partitions, and understated lighting achieved by Venetian glass panels and chandeliers. A special selection of “Lucky 8” spirits adds to the ambience of exclusivity, offering players such rarities as Xellent Vodka, which is pot-distilled from Swiss rye and blended with pure glacier water from the Swiss Alps, and Hardy “Rosebud” Cognac—a blend of small lots of cognac collected by Armand Hardy after the First World War [8].
