Project Description:

The only land-based casino in Louisiana, the 200,000-square-foot Harrah’s Casino New Orleans and its 435,000- square-foot, 400-car parking garage, required six- and seven-day work weeks and night shifts to build. Sited from street corner to corner with minimal access around the site, multiple offsite marshalling yards were used for storage of items such as structural steel so that construction could proceed in an orderly manner. The existing convention center floor slab was reinforced with grillage to allow crane access down the center of the new casino in lieu of staging from various street side areas.

The project consisted of two sub-levels housing parking and operations; two gaming levels; a 500 seat, multi-level performing theater and various mechanical mezzanine levels. The copper roof and brick clad structure integrate both architectural precast concrete details and simulated stone fiberglass reinforced panels. The exterior architectural style of the facility echoes the festive spirit of the New Orleans Community, and complements the ambience of surrounding hotels, the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, and the Riverwalk Shopping Center. High level finishes which include designs by the Mardi Gras float designer Blaine Kern create an atmosphere of the famous New Orleans Carnival on both gaming levels.

Interesting features associated with the construction of the casino included the reuse of the previous structure as a cost savings measure. Constrained by the foundation layout, the casino was designed on a skew thus adding to the complexity of design and construction.
